Irish familes Scholes

Started by: thomas11 (9)

Hi have been doing family research my great grandparents were Patrick Brett and Elizabeth Mckeown they both lived in Cambridge St and died there. I remember some of the great Aunts Maggie Mckeown died in the 1960s,big Lizzie I saw a photo of her on Lanky11 blog.Uncle Pat Brett had a pub in Scholes I know nothing new there this was in the early 1960s.
Does anyone recall the area? What it was like to live there? What kind of life did they have? I know their names but want to put some meat on the bones.
My sister and I were brought up in Wigan, I still live here any photos insights stories would be so welcome.
Thanks

Hi, thomas11 I lived just a few streets away in Lime St.from birth until I was 15 all the steets where pretty much the same terraced houses usually two up two down we lived just outside the irish community although we were raised as catholics and a lot of my friends went to stpats.I think if you try the HISTORY SHOP they will give all the info you require. as for pubs there was a great many just on Scholes itself good luck with your search.j

Hi thomas11 it was the Princess of Wales and it was on Greeough St just around the corner from where I lived it was situated on the main Whit walks route not very far from the starting point for my old school St Marys on Standishgate sadly all the people that I knew that could help your search are no longer with us so I say again try the history shop regards.

I knew Lizzy very well and Maureen her daughter was my daughters God mother Maureen was going out with a lad named Fred. they moved to the new flat's I saw them a little more after that they came to my wedding. I left Wigan and moved to Scotland and never saw them again.
Maggie lived on one side of me Lizzie on the other In Cambridge St it was fun living there. Lizzie and Maggie would Wrap my baby up in a shawl and walk her up and down the st.
One day on of the kids in the st set my house on fire so I had to move away.I liked living there and missed the people when I left. good luck with finding what your looking for.
